In Selma, Alabama, a monument to the first leader of the Ku Klux Klan is under construction on public land.

The statue is of Confederate General Nathan Forrest who was the first Grand WIzard of the Klan. He best known for massacring Black Union soldiers at the Civil War battle of Fort Pillow. A group called Friends of Forrest have even been giving the blessing of the Selma City Council to complete the monument. The group is planning to lay concrete for a new foundation, add a new bust of the KKK founder, enclose the monument in a wrought iron gate, and add night lighting.

Selma is home to some of the most important events of the Civil Rights Movement — including “Bloody Sunday,” when 600 activists fighting for African-American voting rights were attacked by state and local police.

Insensitive Tweets of the Day: In what should come as a surprise to nobody, approximately .012 seconds after the final whistle of Thursday’s USA vs. Japan gold medal soccer match, an onslaught of racially-charged tweets hit the Interwebs. Because sports and war tragedies are equal in the minds of some knuckleheads, many tweets declared the 2-1 outcome — in favor of the United States — “payback for Pearl Harbor.” Realistically, it was payback for a shootout loss in last year’s World Cup final, but even in that case, the tweet storm which ensued trumpeted the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Japan Daily News has compiled a bunch of the offending tweets, for the entire world to see.

A 17 year old girl was raped by two men and then told by court officials that she wasn’t allowed to talk about it or share the names of her attackers. She tweeted her rapists’ names and is now facing 180 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Her rapists’ names, in case you were wondering, are Will Frey and Austin Zehnder. Please spread these names so that the court isn’t able to protect these boys and shame the victim.
